Eczema Cream for Hands

Hand eczema, sometimes referred to as hand dermatitis, is an inflammatory skin condition that affects about 10% of people in the United States and causes redness, itching, and dryness on the hands.

This condition isn’t contagious nor a sign of poor hygiene. Instead, it’s brought on by a combination of genetics and environmental triggers. Though there is no cure, it’s symptoms can be treated with the proper skincare.

What are the Symptoms of Hand Eczema?

Almost all forms of eczema cause the skin to become red, inflamed and itchy. This is also the case for hand eczema, though this particular form is also characterized by cracked skin, blisters, and severe dryness that causes the skin the peel and flake.

Hand eczema can be quite painful if not treated. It’s also common for the rashes to become infected because the hands come into contact with many different substances and irritants throughout the day. That’s why proper treatment is imperative.

Treating Eczema on the Hands

There is no cure for eczema, but there are several effective treatment methods that soothe symptoms and help prevent future flare-ups. The best treatment methods for hand eczema involve a combination of trigger management and moisturizing.

Like other forms of this condition, hand eczema is brought on or worsened by triggers, or environmental factors that irritate the skin and induce flare-ups. Avoid common triggers for eczema of the hands like:

  • Extreme Temperature – Both intense heat, like washing hands in hot water, and intense cold, like going outside in the winter without gloves, can irritate the skin and cause a flare-up.
  • Scratchy Materials – Some fabrics like wool or polyester are too itchy and irritating. Choose soft materials like cotton for gloves, clothing, and towels.
  • Harsh Products – Common household products like hand soaps with colors or scents, scented laundry detergents, scented dish soaps and hand creams or lotions with flowery or fruity scents can irritate the hands. Choose fragrance-free, gentle products when possible, and use gloves when washing dishes, doing laundry, or cleaning.

Proper moisturizing is also key for treating hand eczema. When its working the way it should, our skin has a natural defense system helps keep moisture in and irritating environmental triggers out. But eczema-prone skin’s defense system is damaged, which means that it has trouble holding onto moisture and keeping irritants out. That’s why it’s imperative to regularly moisturize with an eczema moisturizer when treating hand eczema.
